QUESTIONNAIRE:
ADVANCES AND CHALLENGES IN THE AREA OF WOMEN’S POLITICAL PARTICIPATION
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) published on its Web
site a questionnaire prepared by the Rapporteurship on Women’s Rights for the
purpose of compiling information on the major advances made by women and the
principal challenges they face in the exercise of their right to participate
in the conduct of public affairs and political life in their countries, in the
broader context of discrimination against women and from a human rights
perspective. The information thus compiled will be examined and included in a
specialized report containing specific recommendations for the member states
of the Organization of American States, with a view to improving and
strengthening the legislation and public policies and programs designed to
promote that women fully exercise their right to political participation.
The IACHR will continue to receive replies to this questionnaire until May 31,
2009.
A principal, autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS), the
IACHR derives its mandate from the OAS Charter and the American Convention on
Human Rights. The Inter-American Commission has the mandate to promote respect
for human rights in the region and acts as a consultative body to the OAS in
this matter. The Commission is composed of seven independent members who act
in a personal capacity, without representing a particular country, and who are
elected by the OAS General Assembly.
